Police Report - December 2018

This latest Local Policing Unit report covers progress made in dealing with priorities for the Braeside & Mannofield Community Council area during the period 1st December to 31st December 2018.

"The report aims to highlight emerging issues in your area, and to provide crime prevention advice and guidance to Community Council members and residents you represent. Our focus is to reduce crime and disorder, help create safer communities and respond effectively to local concerns.

Community Policing Priorities

Antisocial behaviour, Violence and Disorder:
The reports of annoyance and antisocial behaviour relate primarily to persons arriving home after a night out over the festive period, anecdotally these appear to be less than in previous years meaning we are all either behaving or becoming more tolerant or perhaps a little of both.

There have been no reported assaults or vandalisms during this period.

Acquisitive Crime:
There has been a report of a theft from an insecure vehicle which was entered overnight and a spare set of house keys were taken, this caused a considerable amount of stress and upheaval for the homeowner in getting a number of locks changed.

A secure garage was entered and a cycle taken from within, given the significant number of new cycles arriving at this time of year we would remind everyone to secure them to something in the garage/shed as well as locking the door.

Road Safety & Road Crime:
In response to your requests Officers will be taking a robust approach balancing education with enforcement to ensure the relatively small minority who are responsible for committing offences and antisocial behaviour with vehicles are held accountable for their actions. We will be working with partners and making use of antisocial behaviour legislation. Residents in the areas affected by antisocial driving are encouraged to contact Police on 101 at the time to report incidents in order for us to take positive action.

A number of those stopped for drink driving over the festive period have been as a result of calls by concerned locals and businesses. We all have a role to play in reducing instances of drink driving, everyone from the bar staff through to the person watching from across the road. Please don’t leave it to someone else, we would much rather have 10 calls about one individual than none at all.

Community Engagement & Reassurance
As we put the festivities behind us and look to the New Year could you take a moment to have a look around your home and local area?

Now the wind has blown away most of the leaves have a look and see what’s hiding in the undergrowth is it something which the City Council could remove to the tip, is it something we should know about?

Could you improve your security? Often little more than a judiciously selected and placed plant can make the most difference.

We would ask you to look here http://www.scotland.police.uk/keep-safe/home-and-personal-property/secure-your-home for the best current advice in relation to home security and here http://www.scotland.police.uk/homein/ for an interactive look at an example of a home and how its security could be improved.

If your still unsure and would like a home security survey your local officers would be happy to assist, please let us know using the CPT mailboxes below.

The recent successful National launch of the resilience website has proven to be a significant source of information for both community groups and individuals, we are happy to assist with information and advice at a more local level if needed.

You will find helpful links, numbers, contacts and advice on the pages of useful agencies like https://www.transport.gov.scot/ the https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/ and https://readyscotland.org/ the Scottish Government's resilience division.

Our advice as the seasons change and the weather can worsen is to familiarise yourself with your plan (we know you have one) for disruption which could be anything from flooding to a power cut.

Have look and see if you have enough de-icer and washer fluid for your car, do you know where your local grit bins are?

This is the time to think WHAT WOULD I DO IF!

If we have a significant snowfall or a period of prolonged cold temperatures do you have a snow shovel, if you rely on solid fuel do you have enough?

Once your plans are complete please spare a thought for the elderly and vulnerable in your local area. You might have a SUV and lots of outdoor clothing to get out and about, they may not.

If you are travelling on the roads you should ensure you and your vehicle are adequately prepared for the conditions, making sure you have sufficient fuel and supplies such as warm clothing, food and water in the event you are delayed. Charge your mobile phone and plan your route in advance. Listen to media broadcasts, especially local radio, and visit the Traffic Scotland website for more advice.

Our new warning levels are:
• Travel with Caution
• High Risk of Disruption
• Avoid Travel on the Roads
• High winds - travel with caution - vulnerable vehicles

The importance of the relationship between you the Community Council and us your CPT in preventing crime cannot be underestimated, you are an integral part of our community and as such have access to information and opinions not open or readily accessible to us.

You can help us in being able to take local action on behalf of local people.

We will continue to feed back to you at the Community Council meetings regarding the specific points you have raised. Should you have any queries please don’t hesitate to contact us.

National Campaigns

2019 will see the introduction of the DOMESTIC ABUSE (SCOTLAND) ACT 2018

http://www.legislation.gov.uk/asp/2018/5/contents/enacted.

This is a significant piece of legislation as it deals with abusive and controlling behaviour.

We recognise that domestic abuse is more than physical assaults, it's about abusers who exert control over their victims by using a range of debilitating tactics. Survivors have long told us that whilst physical assaults are often part of that abuse, it is commonly the punishing psychological abuse which is more difficult to cope with. This new legislation is very welcome as it recognises the full extent of abuse that victims suffer and allows us to bring the full weight of the law against those who commit abuse, whatever its form.
