Resumption of Recycled Waste Collection

On the 25th March, Aberdeen City Council suspended the collection of mixed recycling and brown bins due to the coronavirus crisis.

The Council have now announced that these collections will resume from Monday 6 April, although on a reduced frequency – a 4 weekly cycle.

Brown bins across the city will be collected w/c 6 April and w/c 13 April and mixed recycling bins across the city will be collected w/c 20 April and w/c 27 April and thereafter every 4 weeks

General waste bins will continue to be emptied fortnightly.

Collection days will remain the same as they were on the normal service but with a change to the frequency of collection.

The Council have offered the following guidance for residents

Given the reduced collection frequency residents are advised:

• To download a revised collection calendar from the Council website: www.aberdeencity.gov.uk/bincollections
• To read the FAQs on the Council’s website for more information
• Food waste should be put in the brown bin or general waste bin, whichever is due for collection next. This is to avoid a situation where food waste may be in a bin for a number of weeks.
• To make the most of the space in their recycling bins, residents should flatten items if they can.
• Share information with neighbours, whilst following social distancing guidelines, who may not be able to access calendars online.
• Check the Council webpages and social media for further updates.

Recycling points remain available at many supermarkets (note Morrison’s on King Street has closed). Residents can take excess recycling to these points but should not make unnecessary trips, combining instead with essential shopping. They should also follow Government guidelines on social distancing and hygiene. Flaps have been removed from bins to help reduce contact.

Charity clothing banks at recycling points are all closed because the collectors have been advised this is not critical work. Signs are being attached to the bank informing the public that they are closed. In the meantime, residents are asked to store items safely.

The 5 Household Waste and Recycling Centres remain closed to protect staff and public. In addition, special uplifts are suspended to focus on delivering essential services. Residents are asked to store large items safely, away from communal areas, until bulky collections resume or HWRCs open.
Residents should not leave anything next to any bins, whether wheeled bin, communal bin or recycling point, as this is fly-tipping.
