Police Report - June 2022

The following report for our local police unit activity in the area in June has just been received.

"Our focus is to reduce crime and disorder, help create safer communities and respond effectively to local concerns.

Community Policing Priorities
Antisocial behaviour, Violence and Disorder:
In the small hours of Saturday 4th June officers were called to and address on Craigielea Avenue regards a noise complaint, officers attended but no noise was heard.

On Tuesday 7th June officers received reports of a ‘road rage’ type incident on South Anderson Drive, involving two motorists having a verbal argument on the road. The complainer did the right thing by keeping the doors locked and immediately dialling 999. Resulting in the other driver leaving the scene. Officers are following a line of enquiry to identify the male responsible and anyone with information is asked to contact Police on 101 quoting incident number 0771 of the 7th June. 

Officers continue to patrol the area and respond to calls of an anti-social nature, this includes the pitches at the International School Aberdeen, where the Community Council have raised concerns on behalf of the neighbouring residents about young people playing loud music and kicking balls into gardens in the evenings. 

Acquisitive Crime:

On Thursday 9th June a resident of Kenfield Crescent reported seeing a white van acting suspiciously in the street, officers attended but the vehicle had left prior to their arrival. No crimes were identified and the vehicle has been circulated to local officers for awareness.

Officers are making enquiries into the theft of parts from a cast iron gate on Broomfield Road that occurred between Tuesday 21st and Wednesday 22nd June. 

I would like to remind us all to remain vigilant as we have received a report regards a ‘Rogue Trader’ who carried out work at a property in the Morningside area, charging excessive amount for poor quality work, this will be reported to trading standards but is a reminder not accept or be pressurised into accepting work from someone calling on your doorstep. Road Safety & Road Crime:

There have been no specific incidents of note in relation to Road Safety / Road Crime this month.

We continue to work with partners in response to specific complaints in terms of road traffic offences. Residents in the areas affected by antisocial driving are encouraged to contact Police on 101 at the time, to report incidents and provide as much description as possible of the vehicle(s)/person(s) in order for  us to take positive action.

Community Engagement & Reassurance

How can I spot a rogue trader?

• They tell you the work needs to be done immediately.
• They will ask to be paid there and then.
• They may offer to go to the bank with you if you don’t have the cash at hand.

How can I protect myself from doorstep crime?
Here are some tips to follow to protect yourself.

• Be on guard if someone turns up unexpectedly
• Keep front and back doors locked
• Use the door viewer or nearby window when answering the door
• Fit a door chain or bar – use it and keep it on when talking to callers at the door
• If you’re not sure, don’t answer the door
• 
  Don’t feel embarrassed - genuine callers expect you to be careful
• Only let callers in if they have an appointment - confirm they are genuine
• Always ask for identification badges, but don’t rely on them
• Identity cards can be faked – phone the company to verify their identity
• Some companies offer a password system - ask if this can be used
• If you have a password with a company make sure the caller uses it
• Never let people persuade you to let them into your home – they may not be genuine.
• If someone is persistent, ask them to call at another time and get a friend or family member to be with you
• Never agree to pay for goods or give money to strangers who arrive at your door
• Don’t keep large amounts of money in your home
• Remember, it’s your home, there’s no reason why anyone should ever enter your home against your wishes
• If you’re not sure, don’t answer the door.

What else can I do to stop being defrauded by a rogue trader?

Trading Standards advice is:

• Don’t feel pressurised into agreeing to immediate work or buying a product or service
• Don’t agree to buy from the first person who calls
• Don’t pay cash up front.
• Don't offer to go and get money
• Shop around if you decide you need work done
• Ask what your cancellation rights are
• Report them.
